Life on the Prairie

About the Essay

The American Indians of North Dakota all share in holding a deep relationship with nature. North Dakotan tribes include the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, the Yanktonia, Sisseton, Wahpeton, Hunkpapa and other Dakotah/Lakotah (Sioux) Tribes, along with the Pembina Chippewa, Cree and Metis. Although each individual tribe may have their diverse cultural ways, they all share beliefs stemming from a deep appreciation and understanding of the earth that dates back to their early origins. The magnificence of Indian culture is a hidden beauty within North Dakota. The cultural ties they hold to the land runs deep, yet the history is often overlooked. Hopefully this essay sheds some light on the tribal culture and the history attached to it.
